Santa Barbara Kali/Jeet Kune Do Club

The Santa Barbara Kali/Jeet Kune Do Club is a Santa Barbara-based martial arts group headed by Sifu/Guru Michael Rayas. It was created to offer instruction in different martial arts such as Jeet Kune Do, Filipino Kali-Escrima-Arnis, Kickboxing/Boxing, Muay Thai and Shooto. The method taught here is Rayas JKD/Kali/Silat which teaches both armed and unarmed classes to its students in order to fully understand the philosophical and street-type approach with modern principles, tactics and training exercises.

Instructor

Sifu/Guro Michael Rayas has been teaching martial arts for over 20 years. For the past 15 years Michael has been teaching as Head Instructor for the Kickboxing and Filipino Kali classes at the University of California Santa Barbara.

His background includes various martial arts disciplines:

  • Jun Fan Gung Fu/Jeet Kune Do (Jerry Poteet JKD Association)
  • Kickboxing/Boxing/Muay Thai (Inosanto Academy)
  • Tiger/Krane Hung Gar (Wu Hsin Tao Gung Fu Association)
  • Kenpo/Kajukenbo (Sensei Earl Boles Jr.)
  • Filipino/Indonesian Penjak Silat (Guro Bud Balani Jr.)
  • Grappling Arts [Shooto/Silat] (VLE & Inosanto Academy)


During his years of teaching Michael has competed, fought and won various competitions in semi-contact karate, kickboxing and full-contact stick fighting. He has also trained and coached students in various full contact competitions. One of Michael's highlights was being part of the National Muay Thai Kickboxing team, where he fought for over two years.

Michael has studied and established himself under such world calss instructors and groups as:

Today Michael continues to teach in Santa Barbara to a small, select group (closed-door) ranging up to no more than five students at a time, each evaluated in a one-on-one format.
